2009 Pro Bono

October 2009
Jonathan lectured to law students at the Bond University Law School (picture) about the benefits of doing “pro bono public” legal work and giving to the community when they graduate and become lawyers. He delivered a paper. The law students were very receptive to his thesis: that by giving they would be receiving much more and also that others would benefit in the process. Bond Uni Law are very supportive of the ethos of lawyers providing pro bono legal services.
September 2009
Jonathan concluded a series of 8 weekly pro bono legal conferences at the Harvest Café, on consecutive Mondays. He conducted in excess of 50 “one on one” pro bono law conferences. The overwhelming response to the survey was that the pro bono conference:
• Was a definite benefit to people attending with legal problems
• Gave them a better idea of how they could resolve their legal issues
• Was a great idea
Most surveyed found that their happiness was enhanced. Jonathan also did reading and preparation during the week from his office on client’s legal issues. Many legal issues were able to be resolved.
Jonathan also tutored some law students during the conferences from South Cross University and Griffith University. One said it was “inspirational”. Since concluding the series, Jonathan has received several further enquiries for another pro bono conference series. He is considering dates for the next series in 2010.
August 2009
The pro bono conferences continued with strong attendances both at the venue and also at Jonathan’s chambers in normal office hours.
